II Kings 9:26

King James Version (1769)

26 Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the Lord; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith the Lord. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground, according to the word of the Lord.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation portrays this verse as endorsing personal revenge or vigilante justice, ignoring that it depicts God's orchestrated fulfillment of a specific prophecy through His chosen instrument Jehu, not human initiative. Another error is to detach it from its historical context of Ahab's idolatry, false prophets, and Naboth's judicial murder, applying it broadly as a license for retribution outside divine authority, or viewing God as petty rather than justly balancing the scales against systemic injustice and bloodshed.

Truth

This passage underscores God's perfect justice and faithfulness to His word, as He fulfills the prophecy given through Elijah by avenging the innocent blood of Naboth and his sons shed by Ahab and Jezebel. It illustrates divine retribution executed precisely at the site of the crime, emphasizing that God remembers unpunished wrongs, holds rulers accountable for their wickedness, and ensures that judgment matches the offense, thereby affirming His sovereignty and commitment to righteousness in the face of covenant-breaking evil.
