II Kings 9:27

King James Version (1769)

27 But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, Smite him also in the chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation portrays Jehu's pursuit and order to kill Ahaziah as mere political assassination or unchecked vengeance, ignoring the prophetic context of 1 Kings 19:17 and 2 Kings 9-10 where Jehu is divinely commissioned to execute judgment on Ahab's house, including Ahaziah's complicity via his mother Athaliah; others erroneously apply this to endorse modern violence or personal vendettas, overlooking that Jehu was later condemned for excess in 2 Kings 10:30-31, or assume Ahaziah's innocence despite Chronicles noting his evil ways, thus missing the core theme of divine retribution against idolatry.

Truth

This passage depicts the fulfillment of God's prophetic judgment on Ahaziah, king of Judah, who had allied himself with the idolatrous house of Ahab through marriage to Athaliah and participation in their sins; as Jehu carries out his divine commission to purge Ahab's lineage, Ahaziah flees but is mortally wounded, dying in Megiddo, illustrating God's sovereignty in holding all wicked rulers accountable, eradicating influences of Baal worship, and advancing His purposes through anointed agents despite human alliances.
