Jeremiah 34:1

King James Version (1769)

1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities thereof, saying,
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this verse often stem from decontextualizing it as a blanket divine approval of Babylonian conquest or a prediction of their eternal world dominance, whereas it merely describes the specific wartime alliance against Jerusalem as backdrop for God's rebuke of Judah. Some erroneously read it as heralding Israel's deliverance from the siege, ignoring the following verses exposing the people's hypocritical release and re-enslavement of Hebrew bondsmen, which sealed their judgment. Others might over-literalize the scope of 'all the kingdoms' as universal, missing its reference to regional vassals under Nebuchadnezzar's temporary sway.

Truth

This verse introduces a prophetic oracle from the Lord to Jeremiah during the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, whose vast coalition included armies from all kingdoms under his dominion and various peoples, besieging the city and its surroundings. It establishes the dire historical context of Judah's vulnerability, emphasizing God's sovereign timing in delivering his word amid overwhelming military threat, setting the stage for messages of judgment on covenant-breaking and calls for true obedience.
