Jeremiah 9:23

King James Version (1769)

23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
Untruth

Common misinterpretations include viewing the verse as a blanket condemnation of wisdom, power, or riches themselves rather than the folly of boasting in them apart from God, or overlooking the positive imperative to glory specifically in knowing Him, which leads to an unbalanced asceticism; others might apply it legalistically to shame successful people while excusing their own subtle prides, missing the universal call to spiritual humility and God-centered identity.

Truth

This passage from Jeremiah emphasizes that human accomplishments such as wisdom, strength, or wealth are not the ultimate sources of boasting or pride; instead, true glory belongs to those who know and understand God, recognizing Him as the Lord who delights in lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, redirecting all self-exaltation toward a humble relationship with the divine character and priorities.
