Jeremiah 9:24

King James Version (1769)

24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often twist this verse into justification for boasting in one's own spiritual insight or moral uprightness, fostering pride instead of directing glory to God, while ignoring the surrounding context of judgment on Israel's deceitful boasting and call to repentance. Another error reduces 'knowing God' to superficial intellectual agreement or self-affirmation, overlooking the demand for transformative obedience and covenant loyalty, or applies it selectively to endorse worldly success as evidence of divine favor contrary to God's explicit delight in His ethical attributes.

Truth

This passage reveals the core truth that genuine boasting or glory should be rooted in knowing and understanding God, who embodies and delights in lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on the earth. Amid a culture prone to pride in human wisdom, strength, or riches, God redirects all true value to an intimate, relational knowledge of Himself, emphasizing that authentic identity and praise arise from recognizing His sovereign character rather than personal accomplishments.
